The Worcester Public Schools have identified approximately of 2,400 students officially designated as homeless according to State and Federal Guidelines. Almost 700 students are living in foster homes. – From City Councilor Kate Toomey
City Councilor Kate Toomey, Dorothy Hargrove and Gordon Hargrove, Director of Friendly House, in collaboration with the Worcester Public Schools, and the Junior League of Worcester have announced the fifth annual “Set for Success Backpack and School Supply Drive”. This year’s drive started on August 18, 2010 and will run through Friday, September 24, 2010.
During the first four years, the community in Worcester has helped “Set for Success” assist 8,000 Worcester students start the school year with the necessary supplies. Their goal this year is to help an estimated 2400 children and young adults get the supplies they need to start the school year. “Set for Success” also helps Worcester’s schools with emergency supplies throughout the school year.
Kate Toomey and Friendly House are collecting school supplies for kids in Worcester whose families need a little extra help with “back to school” preparations. They are asking for our help. Please purchase school supplies and bring them to one of the drop off locations so the “Set for Success” crew can distribute them to homeless or disadvantaged children and teens.
Here’s what they need:
Pens, pencils, crayons, rulers, notebooks, highlighters, calculators, etc. and/or a backpack – you get the picture, the stuff any kid would need to get back to school.
